Helping the Children Improve Their Health

VAMOS' Health Projects are essential to the children given their impoverished living conditions. What is gained through our feeding projects could be easily lost if staff were not aware of the need to help the children when they are sick.

VAMOS offers the following services for free to any child attending our centers: first level medical care, basic dental services and, as necessary, psychological consultations.

VAMOS hires physical and mental health professionals who periodically visit our centers offering their services. When they identify children with serious health problems, they report the case and look for the best available option among public or private hospitals and clinics.

Currently, Dr. Miguel Acuña visits one of the VAMOS! centers every other day from Monday through Friday and occasionally on Saturdays. He carries the basic examination equipment and medicines to prescribe and dispense free of charge. He carries a portable computer for patients' records and reports. He always has a big turnout of little patients and has reported an average of 5 to 12 consultations per session from January to June this year. Children from 0 to 10 years old account for 68% of all consultations.

A local dentist, Sara Salones has been providing "Mobile Dental Services." VAMOS! now provides our own dental services after purchasing two portable examination units and all the instruments, materials and equipment required to carry out the basic dental services (extractions, cleaning, and cavities.)

An important complement to the dental services is the annual dental camp program provided in collaboration with a local dentistry school. Students attending this school visit our centers once a year and carry-out dental check-ups for all of the children.

They also talk to them about proper brushing and how to take care of their teeth. Dental students have now carried out five dental camps at our centers "Cerro de la Corona", "28 de Agosto", "Primero de Mayo", "Lagunilla" and "Josefa Ortiz". So far, they have checked 89 boys, 137 girls and 56 mothers.
